Celebrating National Reading Month

Did you know that March is National Reading Month? Oak Grove Elementary School is abuzz with all kinds of activities to celebrate books!

The month kicked off with a week of Daily D.E.A.R time. What is D.E.A.R? Drop Everything And Read! For ten minutes every day, every person (students, teachers, and staff) in our building dropped what they were doing to read for pleasure.

This time of year, many people are thinking about their March Madness Bracket…but elementary schoolers have a different bracket on their minds. The Tournament of Books bracket started with 16 picture books. Classes read two of the books and voted on a winner to move onto the next round. Currently, students are down to the Final Four: Magic Ramen, Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao, I’m Sorry You Got Mad, and I Do Not Eat Children!

The tradition of the Scholastic Book Fair also continued this month. Each grade level had the opportunity to invite a special grown-up to a “Read & Feed” – eating lunch together at school and shopping the book fair. Parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles, older siblings, and babysitters all came by to spend time with students and share their love of books!

Each week, elementary school librarian Ms. Klein also sends out a trivia-style game for classrooms. Games include “Guess that Reader” where students try to guess a teacher/staff member based on their responses to a reading survey, and “Emoji Decoding” where students guess book titles based on a series of emojis.

Of course, regular Library time has also continued throughout the month. Each class has a weekly timeslot in the library to discover new stories. Even Timber stopped by the library to pick up his next read!

You can learn more about Oak Grove’s library and reading activities on our Library page.

Happy Reading!
